It's no ordinary rabbit!

The monster that guards the entrance to the cave of Kyre Banorg (wherein, carved in mystic runes upon the very living rock, the last words of Ulfin Bedweer of Regett proclaim the last resting place of the Holy Grail). A creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived!

"So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty big pointy teeth." - Tim the Enchanter

The Glazed McGuffin Affair

Inspired by a recent offering at "Hope Is Was" Music I remembered this episode of Sam&Max: Freelance Police. A 90's cartoon that I thought was awesome, based on the underground comic by Steve Purcell (who also did work on the popular Monkey Island games), about the misadventures of an anthropomorphized Bogart-esque dog and his neurotic rabbit partner. I love weird random cartoons!

The Abominable Charles Christopher

Another in the accidental series on webcomics that I appear to be doing. These are snippets from a comic called The Abominable Charles Christopher. It's about a sasquatch and some talking animals. Here is a sample (click to embiggen):

(animals have no natural defenses against advertising)

And here's one with the Sasquatch and a bunny in it that I thought was really cute:

Webbies and Viral Videos

The 30-second bunnies theatre was nominated for a Webby award for animation. Other nominees include: the Heavenly Sword series by Ben Hibon from Blink Productions which are actually cinematics for a video game of the same name (Ben Hibon also did the short film Codehunters for MTV), New Yorker animated cartoons from Ring Tales, and Samurai from GE Imagination Studios.

Why mention these you ask? To explain how I came across the interesting Webby category of viral videos. Internet videos that have become so wildly popular so fast that it's like, well, a virus. They don't have to be good, it's a popularity contest pure and simple. Anyway, the nominees were BalconyTV, Chocolate Rain, Here Comes Another Bubble, I Got A Crush On Obama, and Tony vs. Paul.

Chocolate Rain seems to be the Mom fave pick. The Obama girl was actually featured on Saturday Night Live a while back (that's the only one of these that I've seen referenced in outside pop culture). The bubble one is fun, try and pick out how many of the pictures you recognize. I would add some videos like the Facebook Anthem, the Leave Britney Alone guy, the Daft Hands video, that kid who can play Guitar Hero on expert, and of course the Most Terrifying Video You'll Ever See and those are just some of the 2007/2008 recent ones that I know of. Remember old ones like the evolution of dance, the star wars kid, or OK Go on treadmills? There are several websites out there dedicated to spreading viral videos (just google "viral video" and you'll find some). I didn't bother putting links to any of these videos because they are so extremely easy to find (that's the point so YouTube it yourself dang it). Hey, and maybe comment with your favorite viral video or any obvious ones that are sweet that I missed!

Most viral videos are either about sex (surprise surprise), or showcase some sort of football-in-the-groin-esque mockery of intelligence and have only gained popularity because of same (hey it's what sells). However, the ones that last more than a day tend to be funny (even clever), showcase some sort of obscure talent (stupid human tricks), or even make us think about issues (*Gasp*). Some have even managed to enter into more mainstream pop culture references so you end up watching them in order to avoid giving a blank stare to the world when you encounter them. It goes the other way around too, many viral videos are commercials, music videos, TV and movie clips, or spoofs of all of the above. It seems, like the common cold, you can try your best to avoid them but you'll catch one once in a while.

Chickens Cultural Moment III: Carmen

The ballet adaptation of one of the most popular operas ever. Definitely different than the opera and notably lacking because the musical score did not feature those classic tunes that everyone knows from classic cartoons (see below), but having a live orchestra makes up for it and it was still very good. Here are the stats.

You know it's quite the sordid tale. At first you think Carmen is a manipulative hussy but then you realize that Don Jose is a stupid jerk. The story is set in Seville, Spain, circa 1830. Carmen is a gypsy who has a tryst with a corporal (Don Jose). She gets in trouble with the law and seduces Don Jose and ties him up while he is sleeping and escapes prison. Don Jose gets dishonourably discharged when he is discovered. Mayhem ensues as we find out that Don Jose totally had a girlfriend, then he turns to a life of crime after he kills his superior officer (who deserved it because he was trying to rape Carmen at the time). Carmen sets him up with some gypsy friends after that but doesn't what to go with him because she has fallen in love with Escamillo (the hot toreador). Anyway, Don Jose repeatedly tries to get Carmen to run away with him but she won't and then he kills her in a jealous rage when he sees her with Escamillo. That Don Jose, he was the orchestrator of his own downfall. Just let it go dude! What the heck?!

Anyway on the topic of cartoons and opera, Tom and Jerry did a cartoon with the Carmen opera score (Itchy's a jerk!):

And here is that Bugs Bunny and Elmer classic featuring snippets from Wagner's operas (of course Bugs did some other opera themed cartoons like Rabbit of Seville and Long-Haired Hare which also hold a special place in my heart).

And finally, in all fairness to opposing musical genres, METAL!

Rabbit and Mouse

What an absolutely hilarious little production! Up there with the Angry Alien 30 second bunny movies for sure, if a little lower tech. This is Rabbit and Mouse from Meerkatmedia. They are basically flash videos of black and white drawings about the misadventures of a rabbit and mouse. They have a MySpace page here but their website with the actual videos is here. Anyway, here is a video they did called "you, a rock, or nothing". I was totally betting on the rock to win, dang.

Bun-O-Vision

This is the 30-Second Bunnies Theatre from Angry Alien Productions. I laughed until I stopped!

Say Goodbye

So the sister headed back to BC this morning and I was sad. Oh well, as little CP would say "at least I don't have two butts". Remember what is true for me is true for my sister, whenever I say something weird it's probably a Simpsons reference (bonus points for anyone who knows what episode it is from). Anyway, her flight left at 8:55 this morning and the parental units will pick her up in Kelowna around 11am (BC time). They will be happy to have her back. Little CP promises to write a post reviewing her trip to Saskatoon and all the interesting characters she met while here. Good times. I loved having you here and I am sad to see you go!

Sad Song

My sister has been singing this song ever since she came: I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie. This song makes me cry, especially the video because of the bunnies. Stupid bunnies! Anyway, the video is on YouTube but I won't put it up because it makes me cry. Here are the lyrics because my sister is making me.

"I Will Follow You Into The Dark"

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

[Chorus]
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

[Chorus]

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms

[Chorus]
Then I'll follow you into the dark
